Detained Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh appeared before a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court through video conferencing on Tuesday, stating that his continued detention under the National Security Act (NSA) has significantly affected his ability to carry out his parliamentary responsibilities.

Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam, addressed the Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry. Due to an ongoing abstention by lawyers, the MP elected to present his petition personally through the virtual hearing.

In his submissions, the MP emphasised that his detention had stalled essential work in his Khadoor Sahib constituency, as he has been unable to raise public concerns — ranging from local infrastructure issues to social challenges — on the floor of Parliament. He noted that although he had sought bail or parole to attend the ongoing winter session, relief had not been granted so far.

Amritpal argued that the matter went beyond his personal circumstances and was linked to the constitutional duty of an elected representative to speak on issues affecting his electorate. The high court has adjourned the hearing to allow further consideration of his petition, with the next hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
