Strong Earthquake Hits Northern Japan, Tsunami Advisory Issued

Destruction Caused by Earthquake

December 08, 2025 10:07 PM

A powerful earthquake, initially measured at Magnitude 7.6, struck off the coast of northeastern Japan late Monday evening, triggering immediate tsunami warnings for several coastal prefectures. The tremor hit at approximately 11:15 PM local time (JST) on December 8, with its epicenter located off eastern Aomori Prefecture at a depth of roughly 50 kilometers.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) quickly issued warnings, cautioning residents in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures that waves up to three meters high could impact the shorelines. Initial reports confirmed a minor tsunami, with waves of around 40 centimeters observed at ports in Mutsu-Ogawara and Urakawa shortly before midnight.

The quake’s strength was significant, registering an "upper 6" on Japan’s scale of seismic intensity in parts of Aomori, a level capable of making it impossible to remain standing. The strong, prolonged shaking prompted widespread advisories for residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate to high ground immediately.

While the region is known for its stringent anti-seismic construction, local media reported multiple injuries and disruptions to essential infrastructure, including the temporary suspension of some rail services. Authorities have activated emergency protocols to assess damage, monitor aftershocks, and ensure public safety in a country constantly reminded of its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
