Former Punjab Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh Passes Away at 73

Chandigarh: Former Indian politician Bir Devinder Singh, who served as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, has passed away. He was associated with the Indian National Congress (INC) party for many years before joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2016. Bir Devinder Singh died at the age of 73 while undergoing treatment at the PGI Chandigarh.

Bir Devinder Singh began his political career with the INC and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Mohali constituency in Punjab for three terms. He held various positions within the INC and was appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly during his tenure.

In 2016, Bir Devinder Singh made a significant political move by joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). However, his time with AAP was short-lived, and he ultimately left the party in 2017 due to differences with the party leadership.

Throughout his political journey, Bir Devinder Singh gained recognition for his outspoken nature and strong stance on various issues. He was known for raising concerns about corruption, governance, and transparency within the political system.

Bir Devinder Singh had a strong educational background, holding a Master's degree in English Literature from Punjabi University, Patiala, and a Bachelor's degree in Law from Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The former Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker had been undergoing treatment at the PGI Chandigarh before his unfortunate demise. Close associates of Bir Devinder Singh revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer a few months ago.

During his political career, Bir Devinder Singh served as the deputy speaker of the Punjab Assembly from 2003 to 2004. He was a two-time MLA, initially representing the Sirhind constituency and later Kharar.

After being expelled from the Congress in 2016, Bir Devinder Singh joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) in 2019. His contributions to the political landscape in Punjab and his vocal criticism on various issues have been recognized by many. The passing of Bir Devinder Singh marks the end of an era in Punjab politics.
